Potatoes are grown all over the world for their nutritional value. Potato is one of the most important crops not only in Pakistan but also in the world. It belongs to Solanaceae family. Its botanical name (Solanum tubersum) is Solyum teo Bursum and in English it is called Potato (Potato). Potato has the advantage of being the fourth largest food crop in the world with the potential to yield 2-3 times more than common cereals on a dry matter basis. Potatoes are grown all year round in Pakistan. About 86% of the cultivation comes from Punjab. Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Jhang, Narowal and Lahore are special potato producing areas. However, the production from other provinces is less.
